Glassner announces we think food is good or noxious, holy or demonic. We pride ourselves on what we eat and don't eat. We outline our meals, and finally ourselves, not by what we've in them, but what we leave out. "Oh yeah? I have been doing Dean Ornish's no-fat diet for 3 years" they let us know.

"I won't even look at a pat of butter." They scowl and spit emphatically to show how much they don't like fat.

( For the record, many years back, I kind of did the Atkins diet for approximately fifteen months, and lost 45 pounds. I also attempted the Ornish diet for a week, and gained 5. They've a Puritan approach to their food. If we reject ourselves pleasure, they believe, we are holy. Or at least holier than those fat slobs chewing on an enormous Mac in the auto next to us. Those folks have no idea the joys of rice cakes and bottled water, sniff the Puritans. They'll never experience the joys of baked soy bean nibbles and skim milk. I have resigned myself to eating that cake with a pitcher of 2% milk, and never feel the same joy of food Puritans feel. And by joy, I mean doubling over from hunger pangs. Part of the difficulty is we get all sorts of data about what is good for us and bad for us, but nobody can agree. The Atkins Diet folk think we must avoid carbs, and eat more protein. The Ornish Diet folk gnash their teeth and shriek the Atkins folks should be detained. However, this parable was debunked harder than the clutzy kid falling out of bed at summer camp. But as for me and my house, we may eat steak.
